Building an author email list from your book's back matter

·7 min read·Marketing

Ad platforms rent you attention; an email list is attention you own. For a working author it is the single asset that makes book two easier to launch than book one.

Put the offer where attention peaks

Place the sign-up immediately after the last line of the story or final chapter — before acknowledgements, before the about-the-author page. That is the moment of maximum goodwill.

Offer something only a reader of this book wants

A deleted chapter, an epilogue, a character dossier, the worksheet version of your framework. Generic newsletter invitations convert at a fraction of the rate of a specific, book-native bonus.

Make the link typable and trackable

Print readers cannot tap. Use a short, memorable URL on its own line, and a different one in the ebook so you can attribute the format.

Write four welcome emails, then stop worrying

Deliver the bonus, tell the story behind the book, ask for a review, then introduce what is next. Everything after that can be monthly and informal.

Author websites and launch email sequences are included in our author branding and marketing work.
